Overview: Entrance to Japan’s Largest Wetland

JR Kushiro Shitsugen Station (釧路湿原駅) is the closest train stop to the heart of Kushiro Shitsugen National Park, Japan’s largest marshland and a Ramsar wetland of international importance. The station is a small, rustic stop on the JR Senmo Line, surrounded by wild scenery and the calls of native birds. From here, you can easily access the famous Hosooka Observatory, walking trails, and canoeing routes that showcase the vast, untouched beauty of the Kushiro wetlands.

History and Nature

Kushiro Shitsugen National Park was established in 1987 to protect the unique marshland ecosystem and its rare wildlife, including the iconic red-crowned crane (tancho). The area is home to over 600 plant species and countless birds, making it a paradise for nature lovers. The station itself is a symbol of slow travel, inviting visitors to step directly into the wild landscape.

From JR Kushiro Shitsugen Station, the Hosooka Observatory is a 20-minute walk. Local taxis are available by phone reservation, but walking is recommended for the full wetland experience.
Tip: Bring snacks and drinks, as there are no shops at the station.

Access on Foot (From Station to Wetland Trails)

The main walking trail and boardwalk to the Hosooka Observatory start right outside the station. The area is flat and easy to explore on foot, with plenty of opportunities for birdwatching and photography.

In winter, the landscape transforms into a snowy wonderland, and you may spot red-crowned cranes in the fields nearby.
