Hosooka Observatory – Panoramic Views of Kushiro Wetlands

Overview: The Best Vantage Point in Kushiro Shitsugen

Hosooka Observatory (細岡展望台) is the most famous viewpoint in Kushiro Shitsugen National Park, offering sweeping vistas of the vast marshlands, winding Kushiro River, and distant mountains. It’s a must-visit for photographers, birdwatchers, and anyone seeking the tranquility of Hokkaido’s countryside.

What Makes Hosooka Special?

The observatory’s wooden deck and visitor center are perched on a hill, providing a 270-degree view of the wetlands below. Early morning and sunset are especially magical, with mist rising from the marsh and cranes flying overhead. The area is also a habitat for eagles, deer, and foxes.

  • Best spot for panoramic photos of Kushiro Shitsugen
  • Excellent birdwatching, especially in winter (cranes, eagles)
  • Easy access via train and a short walk
  • Visitor center with café, restrooms, and local info

Local Legend: The Cranes’ Sanctuary

According to local folklore, the wetlands around Hosooka are protected by the spirits of cranes, believed to bring good fortune and longevity. The area is especially revered in winter, when dozens of red-crowned cranes gather nearby.

Local saying:
「細岡の展望台から見るタンチョウは幸運の象徴」
Translation:
"The cranes seen from Hosooka Observatory are a symbol of good luck."
