History and Cultural Significance

The Ainu people have long regarded Wakoto Peninsula as a sacred place, calling it "Wakoto" meaning "neck" for its shape. The area is also known for its legends and as a peaceful retreat in Akan-Mashu National Park.

From Kawayu Onsen Station or Mashu Station, take a local bus or taxi to Wakoto Peninsula. Bus service is limited, so check schedules in advance.

Access on Foot (From Sunayu or Campground)

Wakoto Peninsula is accessible on foot from the nearby Wakoto Campground and Sunayu area. The 2.5 km nature trail is well maintained and suitable for all ages.

Enjoy lakeside walks, geothermal sights, and birdwatching along the trail. In summer, the campground is a great base for exploring the peninsula.
