The Wakoto Peninsula (和琴半島, Wakoto Hantō) juts into the southern shore of Lake Kussharo, offering a unique landscape shaped by volcanic activity. Here, you can stroll a 2.5 km nature trail that circles the peninsula, passing steaming fumaroles, bubbling geothermal vents, and lush forests. The lakeside is dotted with natural hot springs, including the rustic Wakoto Onsen, where you can soak with panoramic lake views. Birdwatching, wildflowers, and peaceful campsites make Wakoto a favorite for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
The Ainu people have long regarded Wakoto Peninsula as a sacred place, calling it "Wakoto" meaning "neck" for its shape. The peninsula’s geothermal features have been used for centuries, and today, visitors can experience the same healing waters and natural beauty. The area is also known for its legends and as a peaceful retreat in Akan-Mashu National Park.
According to local folklore, the peninsula is watched over by protective spirits, and the hot springs are said to have special healing powers. The mysterious atmosphere, especially on misty mornings, adds to the sense of wonder.
Local saying:
「和琴半島の湯は心も体も癒す」
Translation:
"The hot springs of Wakoto Peninsula heal both body and soul."
