How to Get to Takachiho Gorge (Last updated: June 11 , 2025)

Takachiho Gorge is in a remote area of Kyushu, best accessed by car or bus. There is no direct train service.

  • From Tokyo: Fly to Kumamoto or Miyazaki Airport, then take a bus or rent a car (about 2–2.5 hours from either airport).
  • From Fukuoka: Take the Shinkansen to Kumamoto, then a highway bus or rental car to Takachiho.
  • From Kumamoto: Highway buses run several times daily to Takachiho Bus Center (about 2 hours).
Rental cars offer the most flexibility for exploring the area.
