Ryusei-no-taki (流星の滝, "Shooting Star Falls") and Ginga-no-taki (銀河の滝, "Milky Way Falls") are two iconic waterfalls in Sounkyo Gorge, Daisetsuzan National Park. These side-by-side falls plunge from towering cliffs, creating a spectacular natural display, especially during the lush summer and vibrant autumn foliage seasons.
The twin falls are among Hokkaido’s most famous scenic spots. Ryusei Falls is known for its powerful, single stream, while Ginga Falls splits into delicate threads. A short, steep trail leads to the Panorama Viewing Platform, offering a breathtaking view of both falls and the surrounding gorge. The area is easily accessible and suitable for all ages.
The map below shows the location of Ryusei and Ginga Falls and access from Kamikawa and Sounkyo.

The falls are accessible year-round, but the best times are late spring through autumn. The Panorama Viewing Platform trail is steep but short (about 15 minutes one way). Wear sturdy shoes and take care in wet weather.
From the parking area, it’s a short walk to the base of both falls. The trail to the Panorama Viewing Platform starts near the parking lot and climbs through forest for a sweeping view.
In autumn, the gorge is ablaze with color, making this one of Hokkaido’s top leaf-viewing spots.
