Lake Sugatami-no-Ike – Mirror Pond of Asahidake

Overview: Reflecting Hokkaido’s Highest Peak

Lake Sugatami-no-Ike (姿見の池) is a small, crystal-clear pond located near the upper station of the Asahidake Ropeway in Daisetsuzan National Park. On calm days, the pond perfectly mirrors the towering peak of Mt. Asahidake and the surrounding alpine scenery. The area is famous for its volcanic steam vents, wildflowers in summer, and vibrant autumn foliage.

Highlights and Nature

The pond’s name, “Sugatami” (meaning “mirror”), comes from its ability to reflect the mountain’s image. The area is easily accessible via a well-maintained boardwalk from the ropeway’s upper station (Sugatami Station). Along the way, you’ll pass volcanic fumaroles, alpine plants, and panoramic viewpoints. The pond is a sacred site for the Ainu people and a favorite for photographers and hikers.
