Kushiro Marsh Observatory (釧路市湿原展望台) is a landmark viewpoint in Kushiro Shitsugen National Park, offering breathtaking vistas of Japan’s largest marshland. The observatory features a unique building inspired by a crane in flight, and its observation deck provides sweeping views of the wetlands, winding rivers, and distant mountains.
The observatory’s modern structure houses a visitor center with interactive exhibits about the marsh’s ecology and wildlife. The rooftop deck is perfect for panoramic photos, especially at sunrise and sunset. Nature trails start from the observatory, allowing visitors to explore the marsh up close.
Local folklore says the marsh is protected by the spirit of the red-crowned crane, a symbol of longevity and happiness. The observatory’s design pays homage to this majestic bird, and visitors often spot cranes from the observation deck, especially in winter.
Local saying:
「湿原のタンチョウは長寿と幸運の象徴」
Translation:
"The cranes of the marsh are symbols of longevity and good fortune."
