Hakone Shrine, nestled at the foot of Mount Hakone along the shores of Lake Ashi, is one of Japan’s most famous Shinto shrines. Its iconic red torii gate rising from the lake is a symbol of Hakone and a popular photo spot. The shrine is surrounded by ancient cedar trees and offers a tranquil atmosphere for visitors seeking both spiritual and scenic experiences.
Many visitors also stop by the Hakone Checkpoint (Sekisho), a short walk from Hakone Shrine. This Edo-period facility provides a historical backdrop to the region. Not sure what a Sekisho is? We explain it here.
You can reach Hakone Shrine from Tokyo or Osaka by train or Shinkansen. From Tokyo, the Odakyu Romancecar is a convenient option. Local buses and the ropeway are also well-developed for getting around Hakone.
The shrine grounds are open 24 hours, but please note that certain facilities have
specific opening hours.
Tip: The torii gate photo spot is very popular and often has a line, so

Hakone Shrine, nestled along the serene shores of Lake Ashi, traces its origins to Mototsumiya, the original sanctuary perched atop Mt. Komagatake. Established in 757, the shrine was initially located at this mountaintop site, where the deities were first enshrined. Historically, pilgrims would ascend to Mototsumiya to pay homage before descending to worship at the lakeside Hakone Shrine. This pilgrimage embodies a spiritual journey from the heavens to the earth, symbolizing the profound connection between the mountain and the lake. Together, Mototsumiya and Hakone Shrine represent the harmonious blend of nature and spirituality that defines the sacred heritage of the Hakone region.
