The Asahidake Ropeway (旭岳ロープウェイ) whisks visitors up the slopes of Hokkaido’s tallest mountain, Asahidake (2,291m), in Daisetsuzan National Park. The ropeway offers easy access to breathtaking alpine scenery, volcanic fumaroles, and a network of hiking trails suitable for all levels. In summer, enjoy wildflowers and lush greenery; in autumn, Japan’s earliest fall colors; and in winter, deep powder snow for skiing and snowshoeing.
Opened in 1968, the Asahidake Ropeway has become the most popular gateway to Daisetsuzan’s alpine zone. The upper station (Sugatami) sits at 1,600m, close to volcanic steam vents and the famous Sugatami Pond, which reflects the peak on calm days. The area is revered by the Ainu as sacred ground and is a must-visit for hikers, photographers, and nature lovers.
